The job of a coach is to help others work through their problems and find their own solutions. When coaching others, follow a model similar to the following:

GOAL: Establish The Goal

One you’ve delegated the problem, ask your employee to explain back to you what a favorable result would look and feel like. Answer questions they may have to help them understand what outcomes would resolve the problem. Once the goal is clear, make sure that they write it down.

REALITY: Examine The Current Reality

Before jumping to solutions, allow your employee to get a grip on the situation. Use questions such as:

Where are we now in relation to the goal?

What’s working and what isn’t working?

Is anything stopping you from making progress?

OPTIONS: Explore The Options

Next, help your employee examine different options that could address the problem. Present questions such as:

  • What are your options?
  • What else could you do?
  • Who do you know who has encountered a similar situation?

As with any brainstorming session, don’t shoot down any options just yet.

WILL: Establish The Will

Finally, obtain commitment from your employee and help map out their next steps. Again, let them present solutions by asking questions such as:

  • What do you think you need to do right now?
  • What resources can assist you?
  • What do you think you need to do right now?
