If you’ve ever found it difficult to get the results you want from other people, try this simple management technique.

Managing people can be a new concept to a lot of new founders out there. They are usually roll up your sleeves and get your hands dirty type of people so delegating work is very unnatural. They would rather just do it themselves.

We often find founders feeling frustrated when dealing with delegation. They constantly find out that the work they delegate doesn’t turn out the way they expect or it’s incomplete. They take it personally and the situation begins to constantly weigh on them. They feel that if they want something done right, they have to do it themselves-and as their workload continues increasing, they quickly reach that burnout feeling.

At MCDA CCG, Inc., we will coach and guide you to a more successful way of delegating tasks to ensure smooth operations and establish confidence .

When you are in execution mode, you are naturally thinking in terms of critical tasks, but good delegation requires you to think in terms of outcomes. Identify the core problem to delegate, check that it actually solves your problem.

Coach, Do Not Instruct

Delegating problems is just the first step. The next step is even more important: to help the person you are delegating to find THEIR SOLUTION. The job of a coach is to help others work through their problems and find their own solutions. When coaching others, follow a model similar to the following:

GOAL: Establish The Goal

One you’ve delegated the problem, ask your employee to explain back to you what a favorable result would look and feel like. Answer questions they may have to help them understand what outcomes would resolve the problem. Once the goal is clear, make sure that they write it down.

REALITY: Examine The Current Reality

Before jumping to solutions, allow your employee to get a grip on the situation. Use questions such as:

Where are we now in relation to the goal?

What’s working and what isn’t working?

Is anything stopping you from making progress?

OPTIONS: Explore The Options

Next, help your employee examine different options that could address the problem. Present questions such as:

  • What are your options?
  • What else could you do?
  • Who do you know who has encountered a similar situation?

As with any brainstorming session, don’t shoot down any options just yet.

WILL: Establish The Will

Finally, obtain commitment from your employee and help map out their next steps. Again, let them present solutions by asking questions such as:

  • What do you think you need to do right now?
  • What resources can assist you?
  • What do you think you need to do right now?

Scaling your business will require effective delegation abilities. As you continue to grow your company, the need to adopt a coaching relationship with your direct reports intensifies. The best employees tend to love solving problems-and they absolutely hate being micromanaged. This is especially true if you are hiring people who are better than you!

Additionally, effective delegation is great for keeping your employees motivated. Solving problems helps connect people with purpose, learn new things, and stay in control of their own destiny.

The truth is, your entire team can consist of 5-star talented individuals with quality experience, but if you can’t learn the proper approach to efficient task delegation, work will never be achieved to your level of satisfaction. While we hope this topic provides you with some essential advice, mastering the exercise of effective task delegation may require additional guidance and support.
